ADL (Anti-Defamation League) is the leading anti-hate organization in the world. ADL’s CEO and National Director, Jonathan Greenblatt—an accomplished leader and entrepreneur in the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors—was recruited to the organization in July 2015. He has injected new energy and brought a bold vision to the agency. Under Jonathan’s leadership, ADL is transforming itself, upgrading its capabilities, leveraging innovation, building partnerships, and pioneering new horizons.

The ADL Heartland Office serves the entire state of Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Eastern Kansas and is part of the Southern Division of ADL. The Region supports a multi-faceted educational, community relations, and legal approach to combat antisemitism and hate of all kinds, promote diversity, equity and inclusion, and build bridges of understanding between communities. The Heartland Office is staffed by the Regional Director and is housed in St. Louis, and is supported by the Southern Division. The office is supported by a Regional Board, as well as a robust young leadership program.

This region is known for developing and implementing innovative initiatives, such as an anti-swatting legislative initiative, law enforcement trainings, and robust anti-bias educational trainings with community partners and schools across the region.


In coordination with the Southern Division Vice President and National Regional Operations team, plan and execute the direction and administration of all regional office activities including: fundraising, program delivery, leadership development, communications, government relations, fact-finding/research and office management in order to advance ADL’s mission within the assigned region. Represent ADL in the community, to the media and to public officials. Manage, motivate, and develop the regional board, board committees, and the staff.
• Lead regional fundraising efforts by directing the planning, setting strategies for, and meeting regional campaign goals. Execute methods, timetables, events, and programs in collaboration with National Development staff. Cultivate donor relationships and directly solicit major donors.
• Oversee constituent services, ensuring discrimination/bias complaints and incidents are received, appropriate consultation with area counsel and other appropriate subject matter experts at National ADL is accomplished and resolved in appropriate and timely ways. In coordination with counsel, direct fact-finding activities and implement procedures for reporting results.
• Direct the implementation of ADL programs and policies tailored to local community needs and issues. These include outreach, programs (conferences and seminars) and legislative networking. Manage education and human relations programming as appropriate for Regional and National priority. Program delivery will be limited in scope, based on the resources of the region, and will focus on the core ADL priorities as agreed.
• Represent ADL and give speeches in a variety of forums to promote public awareness of ADL’s mission. Respond to inquiries from the press and from members of the public, demonstrating knowledge of ADL’s policies and positions and relevant local, national and world events. Read, monitor, and respond to media reports and opinion articles. Draft press releases and opinion pieces to be approved by appropriate supervisory and/or National staff.
• Promote visibility and leadership of ADL in the community establishing and maintaining relationships with appropriate community institutions and leaders, legislators and government officials, media representatives, law enforcement personnel, ethnic and interfaith group leaders, and the Jewish community.
• Recruit, engage and work with volunteer leadership. Establish guidelines for including volunteer leaders in regional activities and advisory boards. Identify community leaders for involvement and recruitment to ADL. Staff a variety of committees, as appropriate for the scope of the region.
• Lead community outreach efforts, including initiatives and joint ventures with elected leaders, interfaith and cross-cultural organizations active within the region.
• Maintain regional operating budget.
• Work with National Staff to oversee management of physical office space/lease.
• Participate in government affairs activities, maintaining regular contact with state, local and national officials. Advocate for ADL issues in state and local legislature.
• Recruit volunteers to assist in monitoring relevant civil rights lawsuits and issues in the region and identify cases with potential for Amicus brief involvement. Keep the Civil Rights Area Counsel informed of these developments.

Work Experience:
• Five to seven years prior experience in a leadership role in community relations/community service organization preferred.
• Experience in program development, fundraising, volunteer relations and/or staff management preferred.

• A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus additional related college courses or professional training. Graduate degree in a relevant field preferred.

Work Environment:
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to represent ADL and to attend community events. Travel within the region is required. Occasional overnight travel is required.
