Valley Beth Shalom is a warm, welcoming, vibrant Conservative Synagogue in Encino, with more than 1,500 families and 65 years of creating meaningful Jewish connections for our members. We are recruiting a Director of Marketing and Communications. This position will be a member of the Executive Leadership Team and is responsible for setting VBS’s overall marketing and communications strategy. Collaborating closely with the Executive Director, clergy, department leads, school leadership, and lay leadership, the Director will play a pivotal role in the strategic direction and brand awareness of VBS across a range of audiences.
The Ideal Candidate
VBS is seeking a highly skilled Director of Marketing and Communications who has a genuine passion for the VBS mission and values. We are looking for candidates who exude professionalism and expertise across the range of communication and marketing functions. An exceptional communicator, writer and relationship builder, the ideal candidate is, at their core, strategic, highly organized and results driven. This position requires a broad-based background in both traditional and digital media to effectively reach new and existing audiences be they members, volunteers or community leaders.
The Director will play a key role in advancing the organization’s strategy by creating a clear communications vision and strategy to amplify its endeavors and engage stakeholders. Working closely with the entire staff, the director must be an approachable, hands-on, and collaborative team player. Demonstrating exceptional integrity, interpersonal and leadership skills, the candidate can transition easily from high-level strategy discussions as a member of the executive team to creative brainstorming and tactical discussions with the program staff or the development team. The ideal candidate will effectively build the trust necessary to influence and advise VBS’s senior leadership across the marketing and communications spectrum. Proven managerial skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities are essential.
Building on VBS’ significant community contributions and strong reputation, the Director will provide marketing and communications leadership to fundraising, programming, school and agency-wide initiatives. The Director will be responsible to collaborate to foster alignment and consistency across VBS and its schools regarding content, messaging and branding. The Director will oversee a team that includes a Marketing and Communications Designer.
Ensures that communication is fully integrated, and effectively operates cross-functionally, in support of development, programs, schools, outreach, clergy and crisis communications.
Owns the entire communications lifecycle from creation to execution
Supervises Marketing and Communications Designer, helping to prioritize tasks and collaborate on all design projects, including emails and website
Oversees all synagogue/school wide communications, and help improve communications and create unified marketing, internally and externally, online and in print
Creates and oversee media campaigns and calendar, including video creation and streaming initiatives, social media, public relations, and other campaigns
Outreach to community organizations, partners and local news to promote programs and membership
Owns and manages the website, social media, video and digital platforms
Central to this role is ensuring that the messaging of VBS is communicated clearly and thoughtfully to its many audiences. This includes media relations, crisis communications, internal communications, the development of all related collateral, and working across all forms of media (digital, editorial, print, social, video).
You are/You have...
A minimum of five years of experience in designing and managing successful, mission-driven communications programs with a strong emphasis on leveraging communications for marketing and fundraising purposes.
Outstanding written, editing, and interpersonal skills.
Skilled user of Google Suite, YouTube and all major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) Experience with ShulCloud is a plus.
Ability to learn new technology and database systems quickly and easily, and to train others if needed
A deep commitment to and knowledge of both traditional and new media is required.
A self-starter requiring minimal supervision with a positive “can-do” attitude
Available to troubleshoot crises and emergencies, after hours and on weekends
Able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines; thrive in a fast paced, busy environment; Not easily overwhelmed by tasks and conflicting priorities
Knowledge of Jewish traditions and culture and the Los Angeles Jewish community is preferred
