Temple Emanu-El is an egalitarian, Conservative synagogue serving the spiritual and communal needs of our congregants in the Northern Valley of Bergen County, NJ. For more than 94 years, Temple Emanu-El has sustained an atmosphere of warmth and spirituality that brings families back from generation to generation.
Under the direction of our clergy Rabbi David-Seth Kirshner, Assistant Rabbi, Jeremy Finberg, Rabbi for Lifelong Learning, Jeremy Ruberg and Cantor Israel Singer, we offer daily and Shabbat services, a wide range of programming for adults and children of all ages, and one of the pre-eminent Religious School programs in Bergen County. We also offer a vibrant Adult Education program, an active Sisterhood, Men’s Club, Social Action Committee, Israeli Affairs Committee and special programs for teens.
The spiritual experiences and social programming at Temple Emanu-El provide multiple opportunities for our members and visitors to connect to their Jewish heritage, to the State of Israel, and to form life-long bonds with their fellow congregants and community members.

Temple Emanu-El seeks a dynamic, strategic leader with demonstrated success in management and organizational development and leadership. The Temple Emanu-El Executive Director will help clarify, communicate, and advance the mission and vision, serving as a partner and liaison with the Senior Rabbi and the President of the Board. This individual will manage and oversee the daily operations and will cultivate strong, thriving relationships with congregants, staff, board members, community partners and other external stakeholders. The Executive Director will be a strong presence and affect positive change for the congregation.
The Executive Director will be responsible for the management and supervision of Temple Emanu-El’s staff as well as the day-to-day operations and financial framework. They will work in partnership with the Senior Rabbi to grow and retain members and foster a feeling of community and belonging among congregants. In addition, the Executive Director, working with the Temple President is jointly responsible for the support and management of the Temple’s volunteers and lay leadership.
Temple Emanu-El serves over 750 member families that have a high engagement rate in the Temple. Together, the congregation celebrates more than 50 B’nai Mitzvah a year, host between 35-70 weddings annually and its staff officiate at life cycle events weekly.
The operating budget is $3.3M, and the annual fundraising campaign is $1.1M. There are 4 clergy, 4 Full time Executive staff, 1 Full Time Educator, TE and many fantastic teachers. The facility is 45K square feet on 14 acres of land.
Re-engineer temple processes and systems (in Membership, Facilities, HR, Financial, Schools, Development, Communications, Technology and more) that serve the needs and grow the mission
Further develop the infrastructure of the staff; lead and manage the staff; enhance the cohesion, creativity, operations, and performance
Provide short-term and long-term strategic leadership, partnering with Senior Rabbi and President
Create new sources of revenue through the campus
Strategic Leadership and Executive Management
Partner with the Senior Rabbi, the President of Emanu-El and other professional staff to identify goals and strategies that align the synagogue in areas for mission driven growth, opportunity and sustainability.
Continually assess the congregation’s needs and recommend priorities and necessary changes to strengthen the organization accordingly.
Be involved and working with Temple Senior Staff to manage every aspect of the synagogue’s operations.
Foster a culture with the staff that promotes teamwork, respect, dignity, and compassion for employees and volunteers and all those served by the organization.
Work with the lay leadership to prepare the proposed annual budget and monitor implementation of approved budget during the year.
Monitor Temple Emanu-El’s finances to ensure the adequacy and integrity of the financial operations and compliance to proper financial procedures across the agency.
Monitor the Temple’s cash flows and prepare appropriate analysis from in-house reporting for the Senior Rabbi and Treasurer. Support information needed for the Board and the congregation.
Develop policies and procedures that contain costs and seek efficiency improvements in temple operations.
Administration and Technology Management
Assess and oversee administration of information systems and technology, including website, streaming services, social media, phone system, computer hardware, software, database and office equipment.
Oversee the development and production of all communication and marketing materials, ensuring consistent messaging, accuracy, and timing, including production of the weekly newsletter and promotion for community events.
Lay Leadership Development
Work with the President of Temple Emanu-El and Executive Committee to ensure the Board is properly supported with information and data as needed.
Fund and Resource Development
Provide support for all development activities to achieve the congregation’s philanthropy goals.
Support Senior Rabbi with philanthropy and development activities including annual campaigns, major gifts, planned-giving, endowment, and other fundraising opportunities.
Ensure appropriate cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition processes are in place.
Set the tone for the relationships among congregants, staff and clergy and to support/ensure success of programmatic, retention and recruitment goals.
Foster an inclusive environment aligned with the vision of community established by the clergy.
Human Resources Management
Review and evaluate the organizational structure and processes
Further develop an environment that fosters respect, employee satisfaction, productivity, and high overall morale among the staff and clergy.
Ensure that staff provides a very high level of customer service to congregants and the greater community.
Supervise and manage vendors (caterer, security, etc.) who work in the facility.
Manage the building staff, ensure maintenance of the operations and appearance of building, grounds, property and equipment (including technology, sound systems and live streaming).
Manage the events and logistics of events that happen throughout the facility.
Qualifications and Experiences
Builds strong relationships; create a warm environment
Comfortable being an external face and presence of the community to engage with members
Finding the individual strengths of the staff and utilizing each staff member
Can hold multiple things at the same time; understands and has proven experience how to take a project from start to finish
Think big picture planning (strong familiarity with the Jewish calendar) and think about the small details
Financial management skills and business acumen
Can identify and negotiate with vendors and outside partnerships
Proven experience in working with difficult customers; strong experience in a customer relations and customer services
Demonstrated experience with building a team and staff supervision/appreciation
High level of technical expertise in order to make the office run more efficiently
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Have experience in building procedures, maintenance, security and facility operations (including our campus and two parsonage properties)
Maintenance of the current situation AND the anticipation of what’s coming
Understands how to work and engage with volunteers
A kind soul; a mensch; active listener and learner, familiar with the rhythms of Jewish life.
