Camp Young Judaea Midwest is a place where we take care of each other. Located in central Wisconsin, CYJ Midwest just celebrated its 50th anniversary of offering exceptional Jewish camp experiences for thousands of campers. CYJ focuses on an individualized approach while teaching campers to work in a group setting that fosters mutual respect, friendship, leadership and development. Our pluralistic approach allows campers and staff to learn, grow and play together and to encourage them to make informed choices about their Judaism and connection to Israel.

CYJ Midwest is looking to hire a full-time Camp Life Director (CLD) who is excited to grow the camp mission and values. The CLD is an inspiring leader, collaborative team player and relationship builder. The ideal candidate is a proven experiential leader who brings creativity, energy and experience to the CYJ community.

Year-Round Key Responsibilities

Camper Recruitment and Retention
- Proactively build relationships with families (parents and campers) through their entire camp process, starting from the initial recruitment conversation through their post summer feedback check in
- Envision and deliver effective communal event planning (in person and virtual) to ensure successful recruitment
- Create, implement and track recruitment plans for campers based on existing models and trends used by camp, including collaborating with CYJ’s Marketing and Communications Manager to coordinate social media and other publicity
- Be one of camp’s liaisons between camper families and other year round support staff
- Lead CYJ as the main ambassador at external community and camp events

Staff Recruitment and Retention
- Work in partnership with Executive Director and Operations Director to seek out, interview, hire, train and support CYJ Midwest summer staff
- Develop leadership development opportunities for staff after the camp season
- Develop the staff training curriculum, including overseeing leadership team and staff week training
- Run meetings and ongoing training workshops for counselors and other groups of staff in partnership with other senior staff
- Oversees evaluations of all camp staff

Camp Wellness Preparation
- Review all camper applications, noting which campers need additional follow up; Oversee pre-camp follow up and planning
- Plan and implement pre-camp orientation for camper families and staff
- Work with parents and professionals to create individualized plans for campers who need additional support for their success at camp

Program Responsibilities
- Implement overall camp program and new camp initiatives in partnership with Executive Director and senior staff
- Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and camp’s values
- Problem solve issues in the operation of camp activities
- Ensure the Jewish and Israel values and culture are an integral and visible part of the daily life of camp
- Develop, implement and evaluate summer program, including specialty areas, scheduling and off site programs
- Be a Jewish role model for camp
- Be a presence in camp - get to know campers and staff, monitor and direct appropriate behavior in camp, spend time with the camp community

Other
- Create and manage parts of the Camp Young Judaea Midwest budget and provide regular budget projections as required

The ideal candidate has
- Leadership experience in administrative roles in camp and other settings; excellent management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to lead: train, motivate, support, share insights/ ideas with and manage staff
- Ability to observe camper/staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
- MSW, Master’s in Jewish organizational leadership (or equivalent work experience) and is passionate about working with youth
- Experience working in a pluralistic setting and ideally has spent time in Israel
- At least five years of work experience including two years minimum of managing a team

Additional Requirements
- Must have the ability to spend ~12 weeks each summer in residence on Wisconsin property
- Can travel occasionally and work some weekends and evening events
- Must be 21+, safe driving record and ability to pass clean criminal background check

Compensation and Benefits
Salary: Range of $60,000 to $75,000 based on credentials and experience
Benefits: 100% covered health insurance, cell phone reimbursement, paid time off (vacation, sick and Jewish/secular holidays), professional development stipend, flexible work hours during the off season
