Temple Rodef Shalom is a Reform Jewish congregation located in the Northern Virginia suburbs just outside Washington, DC. Since our founding in 1962, we have grown into the largest Jewish congregation in Virginia, serving over 1,700 households. In non-COVID times, we are bustling with activity: we serve 200+ families in our Early Childhood Center, nearly 900 students in our Religious School and hundreds of people each week who walk through our doors to pray, sing, learn, connect, and mark life cycle moments.

Camp Rodef Shalom’s Camp Director plays a vital role in youth engagement and Jewish identity. The Director is responsible for leading our dynamic and thriving Reform Jewish congregational day Camp with approximately 300 Campers (preschool-8th grade) and approximately 150 staff. This individual fosters the ongoing sacred relationships of congregants including children, teens, and parents, and understands the unique culture that has been created at our Temple-based Day Camp.

Essential Responsibilities
Planning Season (September-April)
• Actively recruit, interview, select and hire staff including drafting all staff contracts
• Develop and manage camp budget and set fees in consultation with the Executive Director
• Design all Camp schedules including programs, special events, special guests, and reunions
• Work with Camp Registrar to promote camp, oversee registration process and assign bunks
• Represent camp at professional conferences (ACA and Foundation for Jewish Camping)
• Develop and maintain relationships with local Jewish overnight Camps
• Engage Camp committee in monthly meetings and build congregational support
• Review, develop and update camp policies and procedures, including staff handbooks
• Serve as advisor to Jr. TRSTY (6th-8th grade) youth group, implementing 5 programs per year
• As part of the Youth Engagement Team, attend congregational or youth programs as needed to build relationships with campers and families

Camp Season (May-August)
• Set tone and culture to reflect Jewish values, serving as a role model to staff and campers
• Design Leadership Team retreat, pre-week schedule and staff trainings
• Implement and oversee all Camp programming and schedules
• Supervise and mentor Assistant Directors, Leadership Team members, Staff, and Specialists
• Oversee staff mid-summer and end-of-summer professional evaluations
• Interact regularly with campers, building relationships, providing positive feedback and disciplinary support as needed
• Ensure inclusion of special needs campers, modifying activities as needed
• Communicate with parents to handle concerns, manage expectations, encourage volunteers
• Establish, teach, and practice health and safety procedures
• Responsible for health and well-being of self and campers
• Other duties may be assigned

Education and Experience Requirements
• BA in recreation, youth development, or liberal arts; MA preferred
• Experience in camp management and experiential and informal Jewish learning
• Experience in staff recruitment, hiring, retention, supervision, and training
• Knowledge of current trends in youth engagement and Jewish Camping
• Strong leadership and management skills

• Strong technical/computer skills- experience with Microsoft Office Camp Minder software a plus

Physical Requirements
• Ability to move throughout the temple grounds for long periods of time
• Ability to sit at a desk doing computer work for 2-3 hours at a time

Work Schedule
Regular office hours are Mon-Fri, 9-5. Must be able to work occasional evenings throughout the year and regularly throughout the camp season. Must be able to work on the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Flex time offered.
