B’nai Torah Congregation, a thousand family intergenerational Conservative synagogue in beautiful Boca Raton, Florida, seeks a cantor for the High Holy Days to serve as part of the clergy team that facilitates two services. Cantor’s primary responsibility will be to lead a full service, with a B’nai Torah rabbi, normally attended by over 800 people.
This service, known to our congregants as the “Family Service”, strives to be as participatory as possible with lay Torah readers, student Haftarah readers, and families participating in honors together. We are also committed to an almost full “davening”, with the cantor encouraging as much “sing-along” and engagement as possible while also presenting the liturgy in a way that will resonate with those who have been attending services for their whole lives. We seek a friendly, engaging, warm, competent and energized shaliach/shlichat tzibbur, and someone knowledgeable of contemporary settings to inspire congregants of all ages. While we don’t say “every word on every page”, the service is guided by the content of Mahzor Lev Shalem.
Cantorial responsibilities have included:
Rosh Hashanah Day One and Two: At least one Ma’ariv, plus Shacharit (from HaMelekh), Torah service (no Torah reading or Haftarah), Prayer for Israel, Musaf.
Yom Kippur: Kol Nidre/Ma’ariv, Shacharit from the “repetition of the amida”, Prayer for Israel,Yizkor, Musaf, and Mincha. Senior Cantor leads a combined Ne’ila, though participation would be welcome.
Important note: In this Covid-era we simply cannot predict what services will look like for the High Holy Days. Cantor must be flexible and available to lead services according to decisions made by the Executive leadership team in consultation with our Medical Advisory Committee. Such contingencies could include multiple shorter services, services with limited attendance, and other accommodations or adjustments. All services will be broadcast on Zoom.
Cantor will be hosted for all holiday meals. Accommodations in walking distance may be available but are not guaranteed. Our clergy team includes Senior Rabbi David Steinhardt, Rabbi David Englander, and Senior Cantor Magda Fishman.
Additionally, if the right candidate is available to share in the leadership of Shabbat and Yom Tov services and other related musical programming before and after the High Holy Days, we would welcome a conversation toward facilitating that.
