Youth Education Director

Temple Beth Sholom, a 150 family Reconstructionist Synagogue in Salem, OR is seeking a part-time Youth Education Director for our youth programs.

We seek an energetic, motivated, and personable individual who aims to make a positive impact in the life and experience of our youth and families. We would like to find an individual who conveys an enthusiasm for being Jewish and possesses knowledge about Judaism, while being inclusive to all our families, who have different ideas of what it means to be Jewish.

The Youth Education Director is responsible for promoting and managing the Youth Education program (the Religious School, Hebrew School, Jew Crew and community integrated youth education programming) through curriculum development, and recruitment and supervision of teachers, and by the active building and maintaining of supportive working relationships with parents, teachers, students, and the Youth Education Committee.

The Director will also evaluate the curricula and instructional methods, oversee school administration activities, and be an engaged, collaborative, and visible community leader.

This is a part-time position, requiring attendance during school hours on Sunday mornings and at school-related events, along with administrative and program development work outside of those hours.

The position pays $10,000 per year on a monthly basis.

Potential candidates will be fingerprinted and background-checked.

The starting date for the position is July 1, 2021. There will also be a stipend available for the candidate to observe the current year’s classes while we are still in session through April.

Summary of Job Responsibilities (please inquire for the full Job Description):

^ Be a warm, accessible, and visible leader with excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for and positive energy toward Jewish education
^ Create a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming Jewish learning environment for all students.
^ Establish and build relationships with the youth and parents
^ Create and manage yearly calendar of events for all youth groups grades K – 12
^ Attend school on Sunday mornings and go to required meetings (averaging about an hour a week)
^ Keep accurate records regarding the program’s enrollment, funds, and payroll.
^ Oversee youth education marketing, including but not limited to, monthly bulletin, social media, flyers, group texts, etc.
^ Organization, implementation and supervision of all curricular and co-curricular School activities.
^ Recruit and organize volunteers for youth events
^ Promote and coordinate youth involvement at and attend Temple-wide events
^ Attempt to bring in new students.
^ Evaluate, develop and implement curricula that emphasizes Jewish religion, history and culture in collaboration with the teachers and the Rabbi.
^ Hire, train, evaluate, support, and inspire teachers.
^ Invigorate the B’nai and post-B’nai mitzvah experience in collaboration with the Rabbi.
^ Gauge satisfaction and assess the needs of the congregation, the school and families.
^ Provide regular progress reports and communication to the Board of Directors.
^ Specify clear goals and objectives for each grade level, establish measurements of student performance and work closely with teachers to ensure the goals and objectives are achieved. Communicate these goals and objectives to parents and teachers on a regular basis.
^ Administration and supervision of the school, including budget planning, record keeping, enrollment (and re-enrollment) and classification of pupils.
^ Selection of textbooks and preparation of educational material in cooperation with the teaching staff and the Director.
^ Planning and conducting of school staff meetings.
^ Professional development for school staff.
^ Communication to parents on a regular basis and acting as the primary responder to appropriately address parents’ concerns and issues on a timely basis.
^ Coordination with other synagogue staff on activities and programs that are related to the School, its curriculum and the education of its students.

In addition to a strong belief in the value of secular Jewish education, we seek an experienced leader and educator with the following skills and credentials:

^ BS/BA required, prefer advanced degree in education, education administration, Jewish education, or related field
^ 5 or more years of experience in an instructional and/or an educational leadership role
^ Experience working with children and with event planning
^ Knowledge of Hebrew, Jewish practices, Jewish holidays, and Jewish culture
^ Ability to use computers and all standard office software, including database, social media, and other communication tools
^ Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
