Educational Director of Outdoor Jewish School

Ma'yan Tikvah – A Wellspring of Hope, located in Wayland, MA, is a small, alternative, independent congregation with about 20 household units and a small outdoor children's program, Y'ladim BaTeva: Outdoor Jewish Learning for Kids, which currently has 16 students enrolled. The families involved in Y’ladim BaTeva have a wide range of Jewish practice, knowledge and commitment, but all are seeking an alternative and enjoyable educational experience for their children.

Much of Ma'yan Tikvah's programming takes place outdoors in various conservation lands in Metrowest Boston, including services outdoors all year long. We are seeking a part-time educational director and teacher for the Y'ladim BaTeva program which will include teaching, administrative responsibilities, developing a curriculum for the school, helping prepare children for non-traditional b'nai mitzvah, and leading family programs.

Y'ladim BaTeva meets one Sunday a month outdoors in the spring and fall and –- under non-Covid conditions -- a combination of indoors and outdoors in the winter. It also has monthly Shabbat or holiday programs that combine indoor and outdoor experiences as well as two 30-minute “check-in” classes per month that bring the children together online. An optional Hebrew learning track meets weekly online. The school currently has three classes for children in grades 1-6: grades 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6.

Ma'yan Tikvah is seeking a director for the Y'ladim BaTeva program who can help grow the school, build the curriculum, and nurture the community. Requirements for this position include:

-a bachelor's degree or beyond;
-training in and experience with outdoor Jewish education;
-a degree in Jewish education or studies or the equivalent;
-previous teaching experience with children in either formal or informal Jewish educational settings;
knowledge and experience with many kinds of learners, including those on the spectrum and those with attention deficit issues;
a love of the outdoors;
-experience with hiking and other outdoor activities;
-creativity, warmth, and an interest in having new experiences;
-comfort with interfaith families and a range of Jewish observance; and
willingness to drive on Shabbat for family programs.

Responsibilities will include:
-teaching one class of children;
-planning and leading family programs in conjunction with the rabbi;
-organizing and administering the school;
-working with the rabbi to prepare children for bar/bat mitzvah;
-tutoring bar/bat mitzvah children;
-teaching Hebrew online to small groups;
-working with the rabbi to develop a curriculum of experiences and learnings;
-building and leading a parent school committee;
-recruiting and orienting new families;
-nurturing inter-family gatherings outside organized programs;
-leading family holiday programs and services.

Benefits This will be a quarter-time position requiring about 10 hours per week from mid-August through mid-June. It has the potential for growth as the school and community expand and develop. Compensation is $15,000-20,000.
