Who We Are
Congregation Shir Hadash is a Reform congregation located in Los Gatos, CA, in the heart of Silicon Valley, affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism. The congregation is a vibrant and well-established mid-sized congregation of roughly 600 family units, dedicated to providing a vital Jewish life, spiritual growth, and a sense of community for its members.
Recently, our Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Melanie Aron, retired after serving the congregation for 30 years. We welcomed Interim Rabbi Ted Riter to the Shir Hadash family in January 2021. The role of the interim rabbi is to help move the congregation through the natural phases of transitioning spiritual leadership and re-envisioning the synagogue’s purpose and programs.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been a virtual congregation since March 2020.
However, as mitigation measures have decreased cases, vaccines are becoming more available, and we are in less restrictive tiers, we are making plans for a return to our campus in the coming months.
We have taken the opportunity of our rabbinic transition and the pandemic to reflect upon our youth education program. After extensive work with a dedicated group of lay leaders and educators, we are thrilled to launch Kulanu (“All of Us”): Center for Jewish Education and Engagement for Youth and Families beginning in September 2021.
Kulanu (“All of Us”) is a multi-faceted approach to Jewish learning that lets go of the notions of “school,” and replaces it with “experience.” We acknowledge that our youth and their families are unique and recognize that engagement in Jewish life is not one size fits all. As such, we strive to support all of our youth and families in a variety of ways in which they can connect with Judaism. By learning and living Jewishly, and by understanding our collective history and traditions, we can find meaning and purpose for our lives today.
No longer will our youth and families be participating in “Religious School,” “Hebrew School,” or “Hebrew High,” but they will be part of Kulanu. This also means that our informal youth and family programs also fall under the umbrella of Kulanu.
