Hebrew & Judaic Coordinator

Akiva Academy in Youngstown, Ohio is seeking a qualified Hebrew and Judaic studies teacher. Akiva Academy is a Jewish day school for grades k -8. Akiva Academy provides education to students from diverse ethnic and background groups.
The ideal candidate will be motivated and passionate about teaching the Hebrew language and Jewish values, as well as bible studies, prayers, Israel and Jewish holidays. In Addition, the full time position includes teaching Sunday school a few times a month.


1. Plan age appropriate lessons and activities for each class, while taking into consideration the differences in students’ levels
2. Follow school procedures for submission of written lesson plans and emergency plans, as well as other responsibilities found in the Teacher Handbook of Akiva Academy
3. Teach Hebrew, Judaic studies (bible, holidays, Jewish values), and Israel, in accordance with the school curriculum and monthly theme
4. Maintain adequate class management to allow optimal learning
5. Help plan and execute Jewish holidays, events, and celebrations on class and schoolwide levels
6. Evaluate students’ level of work and monitor progress in a frequent and timely manner with various types of assessment
7. Keep accurate documentation of students’ grades
8. Discuss and report grades to parents through report cards and conferences; maintain a positive relationship with parents through frequent communication
9. Discuss any concerns regarding student behavior or progress with administration in a timely manner
10. Participate in staff meetings and professional development
11. Collaborate with administration, secular staff, and families
12. Maintain warm, authentic, positive relationships with students, families, and staff
13. Project a positive image of Akiva Academy in the community
14. Any other responsibilities or duties as assigned by H/J Coordinator or Building Principal

The candidate would have the following qualifications –
- Credentialed teacher, bachelor degree in Education or in Judaic Studies preferred
- Fluent in Hebrew (reading, writing, conversation)
- Fluent in English (reading, writing, conversation)
- Has good knowledge of the Jewish culture and tradition (holidays, Shabbat, history, tefilah)
- Has fundamental knowledge of how to teach children
- Has patience and creativity
- Easy going and quick to adjust to new situations
- Has a positive attitude, passion, and energy toward teaching
- The ability to communicate well with parents, children, and teachers
- The ability to be a team-player
- Singing, playing instruments, and possessing creative ideas for projects would be a great advantage, however, not a requirement
