Senior Director for Expanding Our Reach

Senior Director for Expanding Our Reach

USCJ is the synagogue network organization for the Conservative Movement of Judaism in North America. We “Seek Meaning Together” by supporting and connecting congregations and their leaders and helping congregations identify, embrace, and respond to the needs of the 21st century Jewish life. Our USY program engages thousands of teens in synagogues and other settings. Through our partnership with the Rabbinical Assembly, we are working to build and strengthen our Movement and grow its impact, including through direct engagement outside the walls of our synagogues.

Expanding Our Reach Initiative:
In spring 2020, USCJ and the Rabbinical Assembly (RA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to align the two organizations in order to expand their reach beyond their natural constituents of rabbis and synagogues, and to strengthening the Conservative/ Masorti movement by bringing its ever-relevant Torah to more people in more places and in more ways.
Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the RA Chief Operating Officer/USCJ Chief Program Officer and the Joint Steering Committee of RA/USCJ, the Senior Director for Expanding Our Reach will investigate, strategize and implement engagement strategies to reach people and demographics not yet engaged by our existing institutions.
The Joint Steering Committee oversees a Joint Innovation Fund which will seed many of these initiatives as we seek further funding.

Expanding Our Reach means experimenting with:

• Strategically engaging those who are not currently synagogue members or drawn to synagogue life, including and especially those under
the age of 45;
• Building platforms and modalities to make content available directly to individuals (i.e. a retail approach);
• Identifying partners for:
Creation of content
Distribution of content and services
Developing funding;
• Meeting people where they are rather than focusing on bringing people into our buildings;
• Embracing diversity as we think expansively about including all who want to participate.

College Age Students:
• Motivate, mentor, and supervise a part-time college programs coordinator to:
Collect data about where our students attend college and share that data with Conservative rabbis, rabbinical students and other
Conservative Movement organizations working on college campuses
coordinate activities of Conservative Movement organizations, rabbis and rabbinical students on campuses
Plan, launch, and mentor a College Fellowship program of 10 students who will be responsible for planning and executing 2-3 events
per semester on their campus, along with leadership training and study opportunities
• Evaluate the effectiveness and impact
• Evaluate existing research and explore additional engagement prototypes

20’s/30’s Young Adults:

OneTable going forward
• Evaluate existing research and explore other partnership opportunities to engage this demographic

Digital Engagement and Resources:
• Research and pilot social media strategies to reach specific demographics
• Develop a plan for a consumer-focused Movement website for North America
• Develop partnerships and implement pilots for sharing digital content from synagogues and movement institutions
• Coordinate partnerships in planning for an expanded CRM for our Movement’s engagement work
