What is good about working here?
Temple Beth Israel is a nearly century old synagogue undergoing a transformative revival. Situated in one of the hippest areas of Los Angeles and just off the Gold Line, we are a multi-denominational community with progressive values. Membership has rebounded from 50 to 90 families in two years and we meet in a historic building surrounded by a native plant garden, palm trees, and hammocks. We have gained members during the pandemic and look forward to a splendid reopening. The community vibe is family like and informal with a truly intergenerational leadership. The role of Torah School Director position contains significant potential for growth over time.
Educational Vision and Leadership:
Students gain an understanding of a diversity of ways of being Jewish. Students gain a sense of ownership and autonomy in the B’nai Mitzvah process and are prepared to leyn and speak about issues of personal importance through a Jewish lense. Students and parents learn together and are integrated into the synagogue and wider Jewish community. Students are encouraged to learn liturgical Hebrew and develop and deepen their spiritual practices.
Our new Torah School Director will select or design a proven, modern curriculum inclusive of different styles of learners. Curriculum must include how students can apply Jewish lessons in their modern lives and contain a social justice component. Our community is a blend of Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist and the curriculum should be employed to reflect this makeup. Many of our students come from families with one Jewish parent.
