DIRECTOR OF JEWISH LIFE AND LEARNING
Epstein Hillel School, a dynamic and progressive independent K-8 Jewish community day school, is recruiting a Director of Jewish Life and Learning to work collaboratively with the Head of School as thought partner to lead the school’s vision for Jewish education. This Jewish educator will help to shape students’ Jewish identity by engaging in joyful and substantive learning and practice while supervising teachers and engaging in curricular revision and development. SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Jewish Life and and Learning will join EHS’s leadership team which serves as the main decision-making council of the school. The new leader will be responsible for all elements of Jewish learning including Jewish Studies curriculum, Hebrew language, tefillah, Israel education, kabbalat shabbat, and Jewish life/holiday programming. The successful candidate must be a proven team leader who knows how to inspire and manage colleagues towards a common goal and develop a culture of innovation, hard work, and collaboration.
The successful candidate must have a significant level of content expertise in the field of Jewish Studies, Israel education, and Hebrew Language. As the leader of Jewish education at Epstein Hillel School, the successful candidate will embody two critical attributes:
Inspiration: the individual must be able to inspire and engage students, faculty, and parents to find meaning and joy in Judaism; and
Pluralism: the individual must be able to connect and deepen Jewish engagement and learning across the spectrum of Jewish practices, beliefs, and backgrounds.
While strategic vision is critical, equally important is the candidate’s track record in implementing big picture ideas and leading teams to ensure that vision translates into excellent learning experiences for students. The successful candidate will be detail oriented, well-organized, and know how to implement and execute projects with follow-through and appropriate communication.
Finally, this individual must ultimately enjoy working with students in the K-8 paradigm and have experience teaching middle school students. The successful candidate may be asked to teach in a middle school classroom and will also have opportunities to teach formally and informally with all students both in and outside the classroom.
Supervise teachers in the areas of Jewish Studies, Hebrew language, tefillah, and Israel education
Develop written goals for each direct report, provide formal and informal feedback on progress towards goals
Key Administrative Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the EHS Leadership Team
Lead a strategic visioning process to review the current approach to curriculum and programming; manage the ongoing day-to-day delivery of curriculum and programming
Manage the development of a more integrated approach to the teaching of Jewish Studies, Hebrew language, tefillah, Jewish life, and Israel education
Ensure the highest quality of programming in Jewish life that also respects the pluralistic nature of our community
Recruit, support, and retain excellent teachers. Serve as a resource for teachers, focusing on professional development and growth
Communicate effectively and collaboratively with faculty and parents
Key Teaching and Advising Responsibilities
Take a leadership role in all holiday programming and kabbalat shabbat
Teach Jewish Studies in the middle school
Serve as a role model for strong Jewish identity
DESIRED COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, AND COMMITMENTS
Interest in working hard and joining an extremely dedicated and entrepreneurial team
At least 3-5 years of successful team management experience
At least 3-5 years of successful teaching experience at an elementary and/or middle school level in the field of Jewish education
Excellent attention to detail and project management skills
Curriculum development experience in the field of Jewish education
Programming experience in the field of Jewish education
Advanced graduate degree in field of Jewish Studies and/or Jewish Education
Spoken and written Hebrew preferred
Song leading experience a plus
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills and high EQ (emotional intelligence)
Ability to effectively lead others in managing relationships and interpersonal dynamics, navigate conflict well and foster a positive work environment
Ability to maintain a sense of humor and positive outlook
Ability to problem solve and maintain fortitude and equanimity during challenging times
Ability to inspire engagement in Jewish life across the religious spectrum
Strong personal commitment to passionate Jewish living and learning
