Full Time Hebrew Teacher

The Lerner Jewish Community Day School in Durham, North Carolina seeks an experienced Hebrew Language educator to teach upper elementary grades. The Lerner School serves students in preschool through 5 th grade. Our mission statement
affirms our commitment to “achieving the highest standards of academic excellence, fostering learning of Jewish values, culture and traditions while building a diverse and caring community . . . one child at a time.” The candidate will be expected to further this mission by planning, organizing, and implementing an Hebrew language program and by collaborating with their teaching team, colleagues and parents.

Through the teaching of Hebrew language and culture, the Hebrew teacher will support the learner in:
Developing/strengthening an aptitude for Jewish learning including access to Hebrew texts
Building a strong connection to Jewish history, culture and people (Jewish Peoplehood)
Fostering a lifelong connection to the land and culture of Israel
Strengthening their Jewish identities

The Hebrew teacher will support learners in:
1. Developing skills in the three modes of communication – interpretive, presentational, interpersonal
2. Maximizing their individual performance in the language
3. Familiarity with the land and culture of Israel
4. Taking ownership of their Hebrew language acquisition (being able to articulate their strengths and challenges)

Bachelor's degree required
Certification in elementary education and/or teaching certificate preferred
Experience teaching Hebrew language (2 years minimum)
Legal work permit to work in the US

Native (or superior) level of Hebrew proficiency and Israeli culture
Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with students, parents, colleagues, and leadership, both verbally and in writing (in both Hebrew and English)
Strong interpersonal and decision-making skills
Organized and detail-oriented
Computer literacy and knowledge of the use of technology in teaching/learning
Ability to teach in the classroom and online (as needed)
Knowledge of Judaism and a commitment to Jewish life and Jewish education
Team-player (motivated, responsible, flexible, patient)
Ability to think outside the box
Ability to be reflective and transparent in a professional setting

Develop and implement the Hebrew curriculum
Create and document lesson plans that identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes
Assess students using formative and summative assessment tools and document results
Embed Hebrew songs, Israeli culture and authentic materials into all classroom activities while being cognizant of the school’s mission statement and values
Attend and participate in all professional development activities (schoolwide and specific to Hebrew) and implement knowledge/skills/tools acquired in the PD sessions.
Attend, participate, and support school meetings and school-wide programming
Communicate regularly with students and parents
Document issues related to student’s behavior, needs and concerns (consult with your supervisor prior to taking any action)
Develop good social relationships with students
