Chief Operating Officer @ Adas Israel Congregation

Chief Operating Officer

Adas Israel is an ever-evolving, vibrant, innovative urban congregation of 5,000+ members. Led by two Co-senior Rabbis, a strong professional staff, and an active lay leadership, our community embraces a diverse and engaged membership across all life stages.

As a critical member of the executive team, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for managing Adas Israel’s physical and digital infrastructure, finance and accounting operations, HR, and staff development. This includes leadership for our two large schools, one of which is a full-day, full-year preschool, our nearly 150 professional team members, and our $8 million operating budget.

The collaboration between the Chief Operating Officer and Adas Israel’s Co-senior Rabbis has been an invaluable strength for the Congregation. The successful candidate will be comfortable collaborating and executing their vision and listening and leading within a diverse and engaged Congregation. The successful COO will be equally facile with tactical execution of large strategic initiatives. To this end, the COO will work to continuously improve our service delivery and prepare Adas Israel for further growth. The COO reports to the President and Board of Directors.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
1. Financial Management
The Chief Operating Officer manages all accounting and financial activities ensuring that the synagogue’s financial operations are performed efficiently, transparently, and with utmost integrity. This includes overseeing the Comptroller and supporting the annual audit as well as working in conjunction with lay committees such as Budget and Finance, Investment, and Audit.

2. Staff Management and HR Oversight
The Chief Operating Officer directs the Human Resources program of the synagogue. The COO determines reporting authorities among staff as appropriate and oversees personnel administration including benefits, compensation, and performance reviews for the majority of staff (excluding clergy).

3. Facilities Maintenance and Security
The Chief Operating Officer supervises facilities management, preventive maintenance, information technology (IT), capital improvements, maintenance personnel, food service and catering operations, and the implementation of kashrut policies across Adas Israel, which includes our full day preschool and religious school. In addition, the COO oversees the synagogue’s security protocols. The COO also supports the work of lay committees that have responsibilities in these areas.

4. Membership Relations and Communication
The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for maintaining communications with members and the larger community and supports the work of the clergy and lay leaders in these efforts. As part of this function, the COO is responsible for synagogue technology management and digital development. The COO oversees the management of funerals and the Adas Israel cemetery.

5. Lay Leadership, Board, and Committee Relations
The Chief Operating Officer is part of the executive management team with the Co-senior Rabbis and the President and supports the Board and lay leaders to advance the strategic goals of the Congregation. This includes identifying and recommending members with leadership potential and interest for greater responsibility within the Congregation. It also includes making sure that systems are in place to respond to member questions, issues, and concerns.

6. Fundraising
While this is not solely the responsibility of the Chief Operating Officer, the COO will support the work of the Co-senior Rabbis and lay leaders in fundraising for Congregational priorities. The COO will participate in resource development functions, including building relationships with individual donors and foundations, maintaining and enhancing existing relationships, and expanding the endowment fund, planned giving programs, and the annual appeal.
