Director of Congregational Learning

University Synagogue is a Reconstructionist congregation with over 500 member families. Our mission is to serve as a center of innovative and dynamic Judaism, committed to reach out to all who are interested in Judaism, including interfaith couples and those in search of a modern, rational, and joyous approach to Jewish life. Located mid-way between Los Angeles and San Diego, University Synagogue embraces the year-round outdoor offerings and cultural riches of Orange County and the University of California, Irvine.

Job Summary:
The Director of Congregational Learning runs the K-12 Religious School and Adult Education programs, balancing forward thinking with administrative detail. The successful candidate will inherit a vibrant, experiential, project-based learning model of Jewish Education that can be customized to meet individual and family needs.

Responsibilities:
Implement and evolve the K-12 Religious School program-
• Manage and develop curriculum for formal K-8 Religious School
• Facilitate and oversee religious programming for teens, including the Madrichim program, Youth Group, and confirmation education
• Tailor individualized programs for students with special needs
• Develop ideas for new programs, visioning, and long-term projects

Manage logistics of Congregational Learning programming-
• Administer recruitment, registration, retention, and exit information for the Religious School; maintain up-to-date school rosters and records
• Recruit, hire, and oversee faculty; administer their contracts and reimbursements; plan and conduct faculty development opportunities
• Prepare and maintain payroll and employment records
• Hire and oversee Youth Group Director
• Monitor Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidates’ progress in Hebrew literacy; oversee mitzvah projects
• Facilitate Adult Education offerings

Engage with member and potential-member families-
• Plan and implement special events for the Religious School and monthly family services
• Recruit new students and families

Oversee financial health of Congregational Learning program-
• Prepare Congregational Learning budget for Board approval and manage approved funds
• Write and administer grant proposals

Collaborate with synagogue leadership and staff –
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, clergy, Board, and staff
• Manage school calendar and coordinate with other arms of the synagogue

Position Requirements:
Master’s Degree in Education or Jewish Studies
Minimum of four years working experience as an educator in a Jewish organization
Literacy in reading Hebrew
Discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information
Strong verbal and written communication skills

Position Preferences:
Knowledge of Reconstructionist principles
Conversant in spoken Hebrew
