Full-Time Middles School Counselor

Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, an independent Jewish day school in suburban Philadelphia, seeks an experienced, dynamic and caring person to serve as a middle school counselor beginning August, 2021. Interested candidates must have a Masters's degree and demonstrate knowledge of counseling theory and techniques along with child and adolescent development. The counselor creates an environment of respect and rapport while managing the routines and procedures for the department. The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with colleagues, develop student-centered relationships, and foster a growth mindset for each of our students. In addition, the candidate should seek professional growth and learning through team meetings, professional development opportunities and collaboration with Barrack educators. The ideal candidate has energy and enthusiasm for middle school students and demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness while interacting with members of the Barrack community. Professional responsibilities include but are not limited to: frequent communication with teachers and families, participating in the school community, engaging in professional development, maintaining detailed records, preparing and submitting yearly budget reports for the department and communicating with the DCIU. It is important that the counselor is professional at all times- recognizing the integrity of each student, advocating for the needs of our students and maintaining confidentiality while managing students’ needs. Students and faculty are guided by the four values in our school’s Derech Eretz Honor Code: Honor/Kavod, Moral Courage/Ometz Lev, Kindness/Hesed, and Community/Kehila.



-Additional Middle School Counselor responsibilities:

-Provide individual and group counseling, peer mediation

-Act as a liaison and provide support to parents and teachers regarding students’ social, emotional and academic needs

-Be a member of Administrative Team – participate in regularly scheduled meetings

-Coordinate advisory program – assign students to advisory groups, provide teachers with materials to use with their advisees, and give support -and guidance to advisors


-Be a member of MS Admissions Committee – read files, review testing, participate in meetings with prospective students and families as needed, and attend scheduled committee meetings

-Coordinate and facilitate team staffings involving teachers, parents, and/or outside professionals to address student needs/issues of concern

-Generate summaries to be distributed to teachers following Staffings

-Complete student progress reports on an as needed basis

-Provide crisis intervention as needed – during school hours and after hours

-Support students’ re-entry to school following medical/clinical leave

-Collaborate with the Resource/Learning Support department and participate in regularly scheduled MS Resource meetings

-Evaluate psychological reports and IEPs of prospective and current students

-Participate in middle school team meetings at each grade level

-Arrange educational speakers to address adolescent issues – with US counselor and other administrators

-Work with US counselor to plan, schedule, and implement parent education programs; attend PTO sponsored parent education programs

-Provide referrals for families to outside professionals/agencies and communicate with those providers

-Collaborate with US counselor to assist with the transition from MS to US

-Assist with REM period- remediation, enrichment and makeup work
