We are a vibrant Reform/ Reconstructionist suburban synagogue on the south shore of Long Island with approximately 230 households in our congregation. We are seeking a cantor/cantorial soloist starting on July 1, 2021 for a part time position.
The ideal candidate will engage the congregation spiritually, encourage communal participation, and explore new ways for congregants to experience Judaism through a variety of music. The candidate should be personable, professional, warm and engaging. This individual will, together with the rabbi, plan and lead Friday night and festival services, bring music to the religious school, train Bar and Bat Mitzvah students and oversee both professional and congregational musicians for services and activities. The candidate is expected to be available for all holidays and only those Saturday morning services when a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is being held. The candidate needs to be proficient in chanting Torah and Haftarah.
This position is a great opportunity to develop and pilot creative programming based on the candidate’s personal interests. Some examples include starting an adult and/or children’s choir, developing a new musical curriculum, musical chavurah, or concert series, among other possibilities.
It is preferred that the candidate be proficient in playing a musical instrument. Salary is negotiable.
