Hill Havurah is looking for a creative and enthusiastic Jewish educator to develop and lead Yavneh, our religious school for students in Pre-K through 7th grade. We are an independent Jewish congregation located on Capitol Hill. The Education Director role is a part-time position (25-30 hours per week) with room to grow.
The ideal candidate is passionate about Jewish education and will have the requisite background, knowledge, and demeanor to serve our growing, inclusive, neighborhood-based community. Prior to suspending in-person education, Yavneh served roughly 140 children in Pre-K through 7th grade and met on 30 Sundays during the school year from 9:00am to 12:30pm. This year, our program has moved online, with grades meeting at different times on Sunday morning.
The Education Director will recruit teachers for Yavneh, develop curriculum, mentor staff, and help coordinate logistics. The position might also include other responsibilities at Hill Havurah, including optional afternoon Hebrew lessons, holiday children’s programming, family education, and b’nai mitzvah preparation. Compensation will be adjusted accordingly.
The Educational Director will work collaboratively with Hill Havurah’s Rabbi, operations staff, and education committee and will report to the Chair of Hill Havurah.
--Master’s degree in Jewish Education, Education, or a related field.
--At least three years in an education supervisory role with demonstrated experience in teacher coaching and curriculum planning preferred.
--Knowledge and appreciation of Jewish life, traditions, and culture with ability to integrate these values into educational material appropriately for students in Pre-K through 7th grade in a way that reflects Hill Havurah’s values.
--Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to provide effective guidance and stability for program continuity and to act as a role model for staff.
--Superior written and oral communication skills.
Responsibilities and Duties:
--Oversee all activities at Yavneh, either online or on site.
--Oversee student recruitment, enrollment, and retention.
--Ensure the health and safety of all students at all times by implementing and testing comprehensive emergency response plans, and reviewing space, activities, and field trip plans for safety.
--Developing and training a program-wide approach to classroom and behavior management.
--Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of the annual budget for Yavneh.
--Engage the Havurah Board, committees, parents, and clergy to identify school values.
--Develop and enhance an integrated Jewish and age-appropriate curriculum consistent with identified values and goals. Current community priorities include strengthening the Hebrew and prayer curriculum.
--Work with operations staff to ensure teaching staff has materials necessary to implement curricula.
--Recruit and hire teachers, assistants, and substitutes.
--Create opportunities for professional development, formally and informally. Provide staff feedback at regular intervals.
--Work with teachers to develop yearly teaching goals.
Liaison with the Community:
--Attend Hill Havurah Board meetings and education committee meetings. ? Write weekly newsletters to inform parents about school-wide activities and updates. ? Meet with parents to discuss each grade’s curriculum and address parent concerns.
--Assist operations staff with space-related logistics.
--Develop and implement strategies for Yavneh to be a good tenant.
