About the Temple B’nai Shalom community:
Temple B'nai Shalom, Inc., (TBS) was founded in 1986 as a Reform Jewish congregation affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ). TBS is a warm, welcoming community of 355 member units. Our mission and vision statements embody our philosophy. Our mission is "To care for one another and the world around us." Our vision is “To create a sense of belonging through transformative Reform Jewish living and learning.”
TBS employs a full-time Senior Rabbi (started July 2020), Executive Director, Director of Education (started July 2020), and Executive Assistant to the Senior Rabbi. Part-time staff include a Religious School Coordinator, the Religious School/Hebrew school faculty (one-day per week), and a contracted Cantor (for High Holy Days and one Shabbat per month).
In March 2020, TBS shifted from in-person to online operations. In July 2021, we resumed in-person operations with COVID protocols in place and continue the use of technology for worship services and other events. Just three months into fiscal year 2021-22, TBS has seen an increase in membership that exceeds 2021-22 budget projections.
TBS seeks a highly organized, detail-oriented, entrepreneurial leader to help continue this growth trend, working in sacred partnership with clergy, staff, Board, and volunteers to take TBS into the future.
POSITION TITLE: Executive Director
HOURS: Full-time, 40 hours/week.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: The Executive Director (ED) is the synagogue’s chief operating officer. The ED is responsible for overall management of the congregation's administrative and financial affairs, including supervisory responsibility for all administrative, accounting, maintenance, and outside contracted personnel. The ED supports temple committees and long-term financial planning, fundraising, membership recruiting and retention, and, as needed, support for annual operational giving, grant applications, endowment campaigns, and philanthropy campaigns.
RELATIONSHIPS: The ED takes direction from and is accountable to the President and the Board of Directors. The ED collaborates closely with the Senior Rabbi, Director of Education, professional staff, and lay leaders to develop, execute, and evaluate policies, and to build and manage the human, financial, and physical resources of the synagogue. On a day-to-day basis, the Senior Rabbi provides supervisory oversight.
--Manages the day-to-day operations of the congregation’s administrative office and volunteers.
--Develops, implements, and updates office policies and procedures.
--Oversees payroll, employee benefits, and payments to contracted personnel.
--Responsible for the preparation, execution and updating of personnel policies in consultation with senior staff and lay leadership. Develops and updates job descriptions. Maintains personnel records in keeping with best practices in the field.
--Maintains accurate membership records in ShulCloud (or other systems as may be used).
--Working with the Communications Committee, establishes and maintains effective communication processes, throughout the synagogue community and the broader community.
--Oversees the scheduling of activities and the synagogue calendar.
--Works with staff and relevant committee chairs to develop the synagogue’s volunteer plan, to recruit, train, and retain volunteers, and to ensure that they have a positive and fulfilling role.
--Evaluate, revises, and implements the security and emergency management program in cooperation with the Security Committee.
--Consults with and reports to the Treasurer concerning financial issues, analysis and planning.
--Supports the Director of Education on department budgets and tracking revenue and expenses.
--Oversees accounting and maintenance of financial records in conjunction with the bookkeeping service, payroll service, Reform Pension Board, bank, and others as appropriate.
--Responsible for or oversees vendor administration, purchasing, and supply management.
--Monitors and makes recommendations on dues and fees to the Treasurer and Board.
--Works with members to fulfil financial pledges and other unpaid commitments in a timely manner.
--Supports philanthropy and giving. Assists in the planning and implementation of fundraising activities, including annual, capital and endowment campaigns and proactively pursues grants.
--Executes the financial policies and decisions of the Board. Reviews financial policies of the congregation and presents necessary proposals for change to the Treasurer and the Board of Directors.
--Supports the Budget and Finance Committee.
Facilities and Grounds
--Maintains the property in a safe condition by recommending and authorizing necessary repairs and maintenance, and making recommendations to the Building and Grounds Committee and ultimately the Board of Directors when extraordinary expenditures are required.
--In coordination with lay leadership, develops, budgets and implements a long-range vision for the building, reflecting the congregation’s evolving priorities.
--Negotiates adequate insurance coverage for the buildings and its contents.
--Obtains competitive bids for services, projects and contracts.
--Manages relations with service suppliers and contractors, providing on-site supervision of repairs, maintenance, renovations and expansion projects.
--Recommends and implements policies and guidelines for facility use, including lifecycle events, member and non-member use, catering, and security requirements. Oversees system for scheduling events to avoid conflicts or omissions. Serves as liaison to members using synagogue facilities.
Religious Services and Program Support
--Provides administrative support for the smooth running of weekly Friday night and Saturday morning Shabbat services, and festival planning and execution.
--Works with the Senior Rabbi, Ritual Committee, and others to coordinate all logistical aspects of High Holy Days including but not limited to: ticketing, payment, member requests and special needs.
--Works with Senior Rabbi and other staff to coordinate B’nai Mitzvah logistics.
--Works collaboratively with the Board of Directors and Membership Committee to recruit and retain members; helps develop, plan, and implement marketing strategies and events.
--Responds to members’ concerns and prospective member queries in a timely, professional manner.
Community Relations & Professional Development
--Promotes a positive image of the synagogue at all times, representing our vision, serving as a liaison with the Jewish and non-Jewish community.
--Serves as a representative of the congregation and attends meetings of relevant regional and national organizations, including the National Association for Temple Administration.
--Manages day-to-day use of TBS social media accounts and website.
--Assists the Board of Directors with long-range planning, including suggesting goals and objectives and the strategies for achieving them.
--Attends Executive Committee and/or Board of Directors meetings as requested.
--Serves as a resource person to the President and the Executive Committee.
--Other duties as assigned by the President.
Qualifications and Job Requirements:
--Self-starter and creative problem solver with strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and efficiently prioritize responsibilities.
--Enthusiastic, organized, highly motivated, responsible, courteous, flexible and creative.
--Three to five years’ experience as an executive director, administrator, or other relevant experience.
--BA/BS required. Master’s degree in nonprofit management or business administration desired.
--Experience in facility administration, contracting for services, and negotiations with vendors.
--Experience with volunteer and event management.
--Ability to network with other professionals in the field.
--Ability to maintain strict confidentially of sensitive member, employee, and temple data.
--Ability to work flexible hours and available to work on High Holy Days and selected Shabbat services.
--Knowledge of financial systems budgeting, accounting, controls, reporting and analysis, and human resource management including benefits and payroll.
--Knowledge of MS Office, computer, and web-based systems, and social media to support administration, events, membership recruiting and retention, and temple marketing activities.
--Knowledge of ShulCloud, ADP (payroll), and Reform Pension Board (RPB) highly desired.
